NDA 1 2027 Eligibility Criteria

Provisional information

The conditions below follow the most recent UPSC NDA notification (NDA & NA I 2026) and the established pattern. Confirm each point in the NDA & NA (I) 2027 notification once it is released.

Nationality

A candidate must be an Indian citizen, a subject of Nepal or Bhutan, a Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1 January 1962 intending to settle permanently, or a person of Indian origin who migrated from specified countries (such as Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and certain East African countries) intending to settle in India. Candidates in the last two categories need a certificate of eligibility from the Government of India.

Age and date of birth

The age band is 16.5 to 19.5 years at the time of joining. The expected date-of-birth range for NDA 1 2027 is 2 July 2008 to 1 July 2011 (both dates inclusive). See the next section for details.

Educational qualification

Class 12 appearing and Class 12 passed students can apply. Class 11 students are not eligible. Requirements differ by wing (see the Educational Qualification section).

Marital status

Candidates must be unmarried. Marriage during training is not permitted.

Gender

Both male and female candidates are eligible to apply for the NDA.

Physical and medical standards

Candidates must meet the physical and medical standards set for admission to the Armed Forces. Standards differ across Army, Navy and Air Force. Details are in the Physical and Medical Standards section.

Wing-wise eligibility at a glance

• Army wing: Class 12 (10+2 pattern) pass or appearing from a recognised board or university. Students from Science, Commerce and Arts streams can apply.

• Navy wing (10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme at Indian Naval Academy): Class 12 pass or appearing with Physics and Mathematics.

• Air Force wing: Class 12 pass or appearing with Physics and Mathematics, subject to Air Force medical standards.

NDA 1 2027 Age Limit

Aspect

Details

Age band

16.5 to 19.5 years at the time of joining the course

Expected date of birth (NDA 1 2027)

2 July 2008 to 1 July 2011, both dates inclusive (expected; confirm in notification)

Age relaxation

UPSC does not ordinarily give age relaxation for the NDA; confirm in the notification

Male and female candidates

The same age limit applies to both

Simple examples (using the expected range):

• Born on 20 October 2008: within the range, so eligible on age.

• Born on 1 July 2011: the last eligible date, so eligible on age.

• Born on 2 July 2011: one day later than the range, so not eligible for NDA 1 2027 on age; the candidate may fit a later cycle.

• Born on 30 June 2008: earlier than the range, so over age for NDA 1 2027.

Do not rely on approximate dates. UPSC checks the date of birth against the Class 10 certificate and rejects ineligible applications. Treat the range as final only after you read the official notification.

NDA 1 2027 Educational Qualification

Wing

Educational qualification (expected)

Army

Class 12 pass or appearing (10+2 pattern or equivalent) from a recognised board or university. No stream restriction.

Navy

Class 12 pass or appearing with Physics and Mathematics (10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme).

Air Force

Class 12 pass or appearing with Physics and Mathematics.

Why Physics and Mathematics matter: Naval and Air Force cadets train in technical and flying-related disciplines, so UPSC requires Physics and Mathematics at Class 12 for these wings. A Commerce or Arts student can still apply for the Army wing. Students appearing for Class 12 must submit proof of passing as required by the notification.

NDA 1 2027 Application Form: How to Apply Online

The application is online only. Keep your documents ready before you begin. The steps below follow the UPSC process used in the previous NDA cycle; screens and wording may change slightly in the 2027 notification.

1. Visit the official portal: Go to upsc.gov.in, open the NDA & NA (I) 2027 notification and use the link to upsconline.nic.in.

2. Complete One Time Registration (OTR): If you do not already have an OTR profile, create one. It is a one-time step and the profile is reused for later UPSC examinations.

3. Log in: Sign in with your OTR credentials.

4. Select the examination: Choose NDA & NA Examination (I), 2027 from the list of open applications.

5. Fill in personal details: Enter your name, date of birth, contact details and other required information exactly as on your Class 10 certificate.

6. Enter educational details: Fill in your Class 12 status, board, stream and subjects.

7. Select preferences: Choose the wing and service preferences (Army, Navy, Air Force) as the form requires.

8. Upload photograph and signature: Use scans that meet the size and format given in the notification.

12. Review everything: Check each field, especially name, date of birth and category.

13. Submit: Complete the declaration and submit the form.

14. Save the confirmation: Download and print the confirmation page and keep it safe.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Entering a date of birth or name that differs from the Class 10 certificate.

• Uploading a blurred photograph or a signature that does not meet the specifications.

• Waiting for the last day, when the portal can slow down.

• Choosing a wing without checking the Physics and Mathematics requirement.

• Skipping the final review, or not saving the confirmation page.

NDA 1 2027 Exam Pattern

The written examination has two objective-type papers conducted on the same day. The pattern below follows the previous cycle and is expected to continue.

Paper / Subject

Questions

Maximum marks

Duration

Mathematics

120

300

2 hours 30 minutes

General Ability Test (GAT)

150

600

2 hours 30 minutes

Total written test

270

900

5 hours

Mathematics paper

It carries 300 marks, with 2.5 marks for each correct answer. Questions follow the Class 11 and 12 level syllabus.

General Ability Test

The GAT carries 600 marks, with 4 marks per correct answer. It has two parts: Part A, English (200 marks) tests grammar, vocabulary, comprehension and usage; Part B, General Knowledge (400 marks) covers Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History, Geography and Current Events.

Negative marking

There is negative marking. One-third of the marks for a question is deducted for each wrong answer: about 0.83 in Mathematics and about 1.33 in the GAT. Avoid random guessing.

Qualifying requirement

UPSC sets minimum qualifying marks in each paper and in the aggregate, and shortlists candidates for the SSB interview. The cut-off is decided after the exam. The written test (900 marks) and the SSB (900 marks) together make a 1,800-mark final merit.

How to Prepare for NDA 1 2027

With the exam on 11 April 2027, students who start now get about five months of preparation. Beginners should build basics first, and students already preparing should focus on practice and revision.

Mathematics

• Revise Class 11 and 12 concepts and then solve topic-wise questions.

English

• Read an English newspaper daily and note new words.

• Practise grammar, error spotting, synonyms and antonyms and comprehension passages.

General Knowledge and Current Affairs

• Study NCERT-level Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History and Geography.

• Follow monthly current affairs, with focus on defence, science and national events.

Daily study schedule

• Plan 5 to 6 hours of study alongside school: Mathematics first, then GAT subjects and revision.

• Use weekends for full-length practice and weekly revision.

Previous-year papers, mock tests and time management

• Solve past UPSC papers to understand question types.

• Take regular timed mock tests and analyse every mistake.

• Use the negative marking rule wisely by attempting only the questions you are reasonably sure of.

Physical fitness and SSB preparation

• Build stamina with running, push-ups, sit-ups and stretching.
