What is the CDS (Combined Defence Services) Exam?

The Union Public Service Commission conducts the Combined Defence Services Examination, also known as the CDS Exam, to select Commissioned Officers for the Indian Military Academy, Officers Training Academy, Indian Naval Academy, and Indian Air Force Academy. The exam notification is typically published in December and May, while the exam itself takes place in April and September, accordingly. The exam is held twice a year. Following an interview with the Services Selection Board, qualified candidates are accepted into the relevant Academies. Eligibility

Only graduates who are unmarried are permitted to take the exam.

For Indian Military Academy, Air Force Academy and Naval Academy the candidate should be between 19–24 years. For Officers Training Academy the candidate should be 19-25 years.

  • For I.M.A. and Officers’ Training Academy: students should have a degree from a recognized University or equivalent.
  • For Indian Naval Academy: students should have a degree in Engineering from a recognized University or equivalent.
  • For Air Force Academy: students should have a degree from a recognized University (with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level) or Bachelor of Engineering.

Stages of Exam :

  • The exam will be conducted Offline / Pen and paper based.
  • The written exam consists of three papers, English, General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics and students will get two hours for each paper.
  • All the questions would be objective type (MCQ’s). There would be negative marking also.
  • Students can write the paper in English & Hindi.
  •  Stage I and stage II make up the two stages of the SSB interview process. Only candidates who pass the stage I SSB interview are allowed to participate in stage II.
  • (a) Stage I comprises Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests are Picture Perception* Description Test (PP&DT). The candidates will be narrowed down based on their combined OIR Test and PP&DT results.
  • (b) Stage II Comprises Interview, Group Testing Officer Tasks, Psychology Tests, and the Conference. Over the course of four days, these tests are performed. The Indian Army employment portal provides information about these tests.
  • A candidate’s personality is evaluated by three separate people: the Interviewing Officer (IO), the Group Testing Officer (GTO), and the Psychologist. Each test does not have a separate weighting. Assessors only assign marks after considering the candidate’s overall performance across all of the tests.
