Combined Graduate Level (SSC CGL) Exam Pattern

The SSC CGL Exam is divided into four main stages each designed to test different skill sets of a
candidate. Here’s an in-depth explanation of all four tiers:

Tier I – Preliminary Examination

This is the first stage of the SSC CGL selection process. It’s an objective-type online test that serves as a screening round for the next stage. The paper consists of 100 multiple-choice questions divided into four sections:

1. General Intelligence & Reasoning
2. General Awareness
3. Quantitative Aptitude
4. English Comprehension

Each section carries 25 questions worth 2 marks each, making a total of 200 marks. There’s a negative marking of 0.50 marks for every wrong answer. The duration of the exam is 60 minutes.

The focus of Tier I is on testing your basic understanding and problem-solving ability. Strong fundamentals, quick thinking, and accuracy matter more than complex concepts here.

Tier II – Mains Examination

This is the most important stage of the SSC CGL exam. It’s also an online computer-based test, divided into four papers:

1. Paper I – Quantitative Abilities
2. Paper II – English Language and Comprehension
3. Paper III – Statistics (only for specific posts like Junior Statistical Officer)
4. Paper IV – General Studies (Finance & Economics) (for Assistant Audit Officer and Assistant Accounts Officer posts)

Paper I and II are compulsory for all candidates. Each paper carries 200 marks and is conducted for 2 hours. The questions are tougher and more concept-oriented compared to Tier I. Your analytical ability, accuracy, and time management are tested in this round.

Tier III – Descriptive Examination

Tier III is a pen-and-paper test (conducted offline). It’s designed to test your writing skills in English or Hindi. The paper carries 100 marks and must be completed in 60 minutes.

You’ll be asked to write:
● Essay
● Letter
● Application or Precis

This stage evaluates your grammar, vocabulary, structure, and ability to express ideas clearly and logically. Good writing practice and command over formal communication are crucial to scoring well here.

Tier IV – Skill Test / Computer Proficiency Test

This is the final stage of the selection process. It includes either a Data Entry Skill Test (DEST) or a Computer Proficiency Test (CPT), depending on the post applied for.
● DEST: Tests typing speed and accuracy. Candidates must type 2,000 key depressions in 15 minutes.
● CPT: Tests proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Tier IV is qualifying in nature, but performance here is critical since some specific posts require a certain skill level to be eligible.
